MoU signed for setting up of IIT in Jammu
  • The Jammu and Kashmir government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi for setting up of IIT in Jammu.
  • The MoU was signed by Hemant Kumar Sharma, Secretary, higher education department and Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi in presence of Jammu and Kashmir deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh.
  • About 625 acres of land has been approved at Jagti in Nagrota for the IIT, while regular classes will commence from the current session at a temporary campus.
Parliament approves Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill, 2016
  • Parliament gave its seal of approval to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016 with the Rajya Sabha adopting it today. The bill has already been passed by the Lok Sabha.
  • The Bill provides for transfer of mining leases, which have been granted through procedures other than auction and where minerals are used for captive purpose.
  • This provision will allow for merger and acquisition of companies with captive mining leases. The bill adds the definition of leased area as the area within which mining operations can be undertaken. This will also include the non-mineralised area required and approved for the activities defined under Mines Act 1952.
Golden Temple To Offer Free WiFi To Devotees
  • Devotees visiting Punjab's Golden Temple will now have free Wi-Fi internet access within the temple complex and its peripheral area.
  • The service would not be available inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and the marbled area around the water pond, keeping religious ethics in view.
  • The facility would be available in all nearby routes around the periphery of Golden Temple, besides all the guest-houses run by SGPC for pilgrims in the temple complex.
  • He said wi-fi would also be functional in all the offices of SGPC and related offices of Golden Temple, besides Akal Takht.
  • The free wi-fi facility will be provided by Videocon.
Veteran RSS leader Balraj Madhok passes away
  • Veteran RSS leader and founder of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Balraj Madhok passed away this morning.
  • Madhok, aged 96, breathed his last at his residence in Delhi’s New Rajendra Nagar area. He had been ill for last few days.
