Govt raises over Rs 5,000 crore via 5% stake sale in NTPC; retail investors disappointed 

ü  Government on Wednesday raised about Rs 5,030 crore from sale of its 5% stake in NTPC, with insurance companies getting almost two-third shares but retail participation was lukewarm amid a free-fall of stock markets.
ü  With NTPC disinvestment, government's share sale kitty inched up to over Rs 18,330 crore. It had earlier divested stake in five PSUs - EIL, Indian Oil Corp, PFC, REC and Dredging Corporation.

Indian-origin art lover Ismail Mahomed conferred knighthood by French government

ü  An Indian-origin art lover and playwright Ismail Mahomed from South Africa has been knighted by the French government for his lifelong devotion to the promotion of arts.
ü  He was bestowed with Knight of the Order of Arts and Literature (The Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres) by French Ambassador Elisabet Barbier in Johannesburg.

Haryana set to become first state to complete Aquifer mapping

ü  Haryana is set become the first state in the country to complete aquifer mapping for its groundwater resources by May 2016.
ü  Aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing rock from which groundwater can be extracted.

IBSAMAR 2016: Joint trilateral naval exercise

ü  Brazil, India and South Africa will participate in a joint exercise off Goa coast as part of the second phase of 'IBSAMAR'.
ü  "The second phase of IBSAMAR would be held off Goa coast from February 23, 2016

Rare Falcated Duck sighted in Goa

ü  Birdwatchers for first time have sighted Falcated Duck in Goa which is considered as rare vagrant migrant bird species to the south of India.
ü  Earlier the bird was sighted two times in southern parts of India away from its natural migratory habitat in North India. For first time it was sighted in Tamil Nadu in 2012 and second time in Akola (Maharashtra) in January 2015.

India remains world's largest arms importer, with 14% of total share

ü  India continues to remain the world's largest arms importer, accounting for 14% of the global imports in the 2011-2015 timeframe, in yet another indicator of the country's enduring failure to build a strong domestic defence-industrial base (DIB).
ü  Data released by by a global think-tank, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
ü  After India, China ranks second in the global arms import list with 4.7%, followed by Australia (3.6%), Pakistan (3.3%), Vietnam (2.9%) and South Korea (2.6%).
