LS Pass Compensatory Afforestation Bill
- Lok Sabha passed the Compensatory Afforestation Fund bill,2015.
- The Bill will enable to utilize money received from industries for compensatory afforestation.
- Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management & Planning Authority (CAMPA) handles funds collected that have accumulated to nearly Rs 40,000 Cr.
- The bill paves the way for unlocking of nearly Rs.40,000 crore which is lying unspent.
Sachin Accepts IOA’s Invitation
- Sachin Tendulkar has accepted Indian Olympic Association’s request to become India’s goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics.
- Tendulkar is the third goodwill ambassador roped in by IOA after actor Salman Khan & shooter Abhinav Bindra.
- The goodwill ambassadors will spread the idea of Olympic movement in every corner of the country.
- They will also help in building up a sporting culture in the country.
Angélique Kidjo Wins Human Rights Award
- Musician Angélique Kidjo & three African youth activist movements have been given Ambassador of Conscience Award 2016.
- Kidjo & groups Y’en a marre,le Balai Citoyen & Lutte pour le Changement have shown exceptional courage.
- The Award is Amnesty International’s most prestigious human rights award.
- It is given to individuals who show exceptional leadership to protect & promote human rights.
Three Indians Elected to Royal Society
- Three Indian names are on the list of fifty scientists elected as Fellows of The Royal Society.
- Physicist Sriram Ramaswamy, biochemist Ramanujan Hegde & applied mathematician Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan have earned the top honour.
- The Royal Society is said to be the oldest scientific academy & was established in 1660.
- Its mission is to recognise, support and promote excellence in science.
63rd National Film Awards ceremony was held in New Delhi
- The 63rd National Film Awards ceremony was held in New Delhi. During the ceremony, the Directorate of Film Festivals of India presents its annual National Film Awards to honour the best films of 2015 in the Indian cinema. The awards were announced on 28 March 2016.
- Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut received National Awards for their roles in 'Piku' and 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' respectively at the 63rd National Film Awards ceremony.
- Meanwhile, veteran actor Manoj Kumar was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the ceremony. The awards were presented to the actors by President Pranab Mukherjee.
Progeria-affected teen Nihal dies at 15
- Nihal Bitla, who was suffering from the rare genetic condition progeria, died in a hospital in Telangana at the age of 15 years.
- The disease aged him eight times faster than normal children thus shortening his life span.
- Nihal was the face of the Progeria Research Foundation’s campaign, which was working to detect undiagnosed children living in India.
IMF Retain India Growth Forecast at 7.5%
- The International Monetary Fund has retained its growth forecast for the country at 7.5 % for 2016-17.
- The IMF said that this growth momentum is supported by private consumption,which has benefited from lower energy prices.
- An incipient recovery in private investment is expected to help broaden the recovery.
- The growth in Asia & the Pacific is expected to remain strong, at 5.3%, this year & next.
Mark Selby won World Snooker Championship
- England's world number one Mark Selby on 2 May 2016 won World Championship title of Snooker. In the final match played in Sheffield, Selby from Leicester defeated China’s Ding Junhui 18-14.
