Canada will supply Uranium to India
Canada will supply 3,000 metric tonnes of uranium to India under a $254
million five-year deal for Indian atomic reactors. The agreement to supply
uranium was signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his Canadian counterpart
Stephen Harper after comprehensive talks in Ottawa, Canada. Canada will supply
uranium to India for next five year under the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) safeguards.
Canada is the second-largest producer of uranium globally and is the third
country to supply uranium to India after Russia and Kazakhstan.
Mohan Kumar will be the new Ambassador of India to France
Dr. Mohan Kumar was appointed as the next Ambassador of India to France. He
will succeed Arun Kumar who was appointed Ambassador to the United States. He is
a 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
India successfully test-fires Agni-III missile
India successfully test-fired nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-III.
Agni-III is surface-to-Surface missile with strike range of 3,000 km. The
missile test fire from a mobile launcher at Integrated Test Range in Wheeler
Island of Dhamra.
Former Nepal PM Surya Bahadur Thapa passed away
Former Nepal Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa passed away at the age of 87.
He was undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. He was admitted to Medanta
Hospital in Gurgaon on March 29.
He served as Nepal's Prime Minister three times before 1990. After
multi-party democracy was established in 1990, he formed the Rastriya
Prajatantra Party and held the post of Prime Minister twice. He stepped down in
2005. He was the oldest member of Nepal's Constituent Assembly which is
currently drafting a constitution.
Saina Nehwal regains No.1 ranking
Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has regained the number one position in
international rankings. Saina, the first Indian woman shuttler to be world
number one after her India Open Grand Prix Gold triumph earlier in April, had
dropped to the second spot following her semifinal finish in the Malaysia Open
Super Series.
Stanislav Gross passed away
Stanislav Gross, who was the Czech Republic”s youngest prime minister but was
forced to resign nine months later,died at the age of 45.
Russia will supply Surface to air missile system to China
Russia has agreed to sell its
sophisticated surface to air missile system to China in an over USD 3 billion
deal which could strengthen the world’s largest army’s air defence specially in
high-altitude areas like Tibet.
Bank account penetration increased in India
Bank account penetration in India increased from 35 per cent to 53 per cent
between 2011 and 2014, but the country also suffers from high dormancy rates,
says a World Bank. The World Bank report also noted that Dormancy Rate in India
is quite high at 43 per cent and accounts for about 195 million of the 460
million adults with a dormant account around the world.
Hevesy Medal Award 2015
Professor Susanta Lahiri, Chemical Sciences Division, Saha Institute of
Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, received the Hevesy Medal Award 2015, on April 12. At
the Tenth International Conference on Methods and Applications of
Radio-analytical Chemistry, Susanta Lahiri awarded for his outstanding
contributions to Heavy ion induced radioisotope production, tracer packet
technique, converter targets, and green chemistry.
This premier international award named after George de HEVESY, the 1943-
Chemistry Nobel Laureate, for his work on the use of isotopes as tracers in the
study of chemical processes.
