Cabinet approves raising of 17 Indian Reserve Battalions by J&K and LWE States

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the raising of 17 India Reserve Battalions (IR Bns) by Jammu & Kashmir and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected States. It includes five IR Bns in the state of J&K, four IR Bns in Chhattisgarh, three IR Bns in Jharkhand, three IR Bns in Odisha and two IR Bns in Maharashtra.

Key pints:
>> Local youths will be recruited. To achieve this, the States will relax the age and educational criteria, if required.
>> In respect of the 05 IR Bns to be raised by J&K, 60% of the vacancies will be filled from the border districts of J&K for the posts of constables and class IV.
>> For LWE states, 75% of the vacancies of constables will be filled up from 27 core districts under Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme.

India and Armenia Sign Protocol amending the India-Armenia Double Taxation Avoidance Convention
>> Government of India and the Government of Armenia signed a Protocol to amend the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Convention.
>> The Amending Protocol was signed by Shri Arun Kumar Jain, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT), on behalf of Government of India and by H.E. Mr Armen Martirosyan, the Ambassador of Armenia to India, on behalf of the Government of Armenia.
>> The Protocol amends the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention between India and Armenia that has been in existence since 9th September, 2004.
>> The Protocol will enable the two countries to exchange information related to financial and banking transactions under the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention, and thereby facilitate them in addressing tax evasion. It is also expected to further strengthen the efforts of Government of India in curbing generation of black money.

Rajasthan Government inks MoU to join UDAY Scheme
Rajasthan Government along with its power distribution companies (DISCOMS) has signed a MoU to join UDAY (Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana) Scheme. State DISCOMS part of this MoU are Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVNL), Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVVNL) and Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVNL).

>> Rajasthan became third state to sign the MoU under UDAY scheme after Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. By joining the UDAY Scheme, discoms in Rajasthan will be able to overcome permanent and sustainable solution for their debt-ridden utilities and achieve financial stability and growth.

India overtakes Thailand as world's largest rice exporter
>> India has overtaken Thailand as the world's largest rice exporter in 2015, shipping 10.23 million tones.
>> Thailand exported 9.8 million tonnes of rice in 2015, down 10.8% year-on-year.
>> He attributed the downturn to the global economy's contraction, especially among countries with high rice demand.
>> Thailand ended 2015 behind India for rice exports. India sold 10.23 million tonnes of rice. Vietnam was third globally while China remained the number one importer of rice.

31 OECD members signed corporate tax avoidance deal
>> 31 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) members have signed corporate tax avoidance agreement in a bid to stem fiscal (tax) evasion by multinational companies (MNCs).
>> The new agreement is about sharing information between members rather than a new tax law.
>> Under it, signatory members have to share information on tax issues of MNCs. It will primarily focus on country-by-country tax reporting of MNCs between members.
